Check Out Laptop Reviews For the Latest Models
Laptop models from Dell, HP, Lenovo and Apple are competing with each other with the best features and great prices. Most laptop reviews have raved about the new Lenovo ThinkPad W510. It has a 15.6 multi touch widescreen panel that resembles a workstation. It is compatible for the NVIDIA Quadro FX 880M and 1GB DDR3 discrete graphics. With 2.0 GHz Core i7 Processor's Extreme edition and 64 bit Windows 7 professional, this laptop has the best as far as OS and processor are concerned. The laptop costs around $1300 and its highlight is the ultra-response for the tasks that use heavy graphics.
The next favorite of many laptop reviews is the new Apple MacBook. It has a stunning design with a fully body construction and aluminum and steel finish that makes the notebook look sleeker than ever and scores high on looks that is so characteristic of Apple. A dedicated NVidia GPU, multi touch button-less glass track pad and thin and light features make this laptop a winner as far as laptop reviews are concerned although the higher price and absence of media card reader have lowered its rating a bit. This laptop is the best for entertainment and travel purposes.
The Sony VAIO Fw-270 j is a 16.4 inch laptop that is as thin as 1.1 inches at the tip and 1.5 inches at the hinge. A smooth touch track pad and pebble designed keyboard have excellent looks and give a decent performance. An Express card slot, Blur-Ray player with USB port, high end connectivity with VGA, HDMI and iLink S400 along with Bluetooth, give this laptop a thumbs up for connectivity in many laptop reviews. The AV mode to use the nbuilt Sony's media playing software, along with HDMI and a Blu-Ray makes this laptop the best for multimedia experience. 4 GB RAM, 320 GB hard drive upgradable to 400 GB with 2.8 Ghz Core2 Duo Processor are other amazing features of this laptop.
Dell's Studio XPS is another laptop that is receiving rave laptop reviews. The 16 inch ultra wide screen with an aspect ratio of 16:9 and an end-to-end display with RGB LED as an optional feature for brighter colors and support for 1080p HD make this laptop a real blend of performance and attractive looks. HP launched its powerful EliteBook workstations at SIGGRAPH 2008
Toshiba, which recalled 340,000 notebook batteries on Sept. 19, said that it would widen its recall to 830,000 HP laptop batteries, Reuters reported. The company also confirmed to PC Magazine that it too would join the Sony recall, independent of its own recall efforts announced on Sept. 19.
But seriously, I'm sure it was simply that the review unit HP sent us was intended for a different part of the world, and presumably the units actually for sale are correctly sorted by location. Not to be deterred, I viewed a bit of a test copy of Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay that we have on an external hard drive, and it showed up well in all its crude, outrageous glory on the dv2's 12-inch screen with its ample 1,280 by 800 resolution.
Business Winstone 2002 is hot spot oriented. It focuses on the times when a user would be sitting around waiting for the computer, so any computer that takes a long time to compute processor-intensive tasks will return a lower score.
Even when there isn't a crisis, companies are very tight-lipped about who supplies what components to whom. We do know that Sony, Lenovo, MicroExpress, Acer, and Fujitsu also use Japanese batteries, but that doesn't mean that they will be affected down the line. Motherboards are designed differently. Circuits that connect to the battery are designed differently. Proprietary software that shuts down the system when it overheats is being used by companies such as Lenovo (in its Thinkvantage suite) and Sony. We talked to Lenovo reps who said they haven't seen any problems related to HP laptop battery issues, although they admitted to Kay that they do use some Sony cells. HP and Sony reps declined to comment right now.
At the top of the chain is the EliteBook 8730w—the ultimate workstation for CAD professionals, engineers, and scientists. This 17-inch behemoth features Intel's newest Core 2 Quadcore Extreme processor—the company's first mobile chip running on a total of four processor cores. Unlike the 8530w, this 8-pound laptop will have higher-end workstation graphics options, which includes the nVidia Quadro FX 3700M, the Quadro 2700M, or the ATI FireGL V5725 chipsets. Of course, these cards also come with the proper ISV certifications. Cellular modems will not be available on this particular workstation, but you do get the latest in Centrino 2 Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support.
The refreshed 12-inch EliteBook 2730p undergoes some minor updates, mainly as a response to feedback given by users who own the original Compaq 2710p. HP adds a jog dial, which lets you scroll through documents and Web pages while in tablet mode. There are dual-pointing devices now, so adding an additional touchpad gives users an alternative to the pointing stick. Slow response times were some of my original complaints about the 2710p, as it was bogged down by Vista and Intel's ULV processors. HP hopes to improve performance by integrating low-voltage processors and a 5400rpm hard drive in its 2730p. As with its predecessor, you won't find an internal optical drive, but one in the expansion base will be available if you need it.
Other incidents of overheating may have involved a problem with raw materials, the company said.
This 2.7-pound convertible tablet can produce all-day HP DV1700 Battery life with its dual-battery combination. Though it isn't as powerful as some other tablets on the market, the 2710p is completely green, consuming the least energy among this crop of laptops and easily meeting Energy Star 4.0, EPEAT Gold, and RoHS specifications.

Last week, we brought you a roundup of five desktop PC bargains perfect for the back to school bunch, as well as anyone in the market for a cheap albeit quality PC. This week, we're going to fill you in on the even more popular laptop category. Laptops are more expensive than their desktop counterparts, and are probably better suited for the young adult heading to college rather than those in high school or grammar school. That said, any of these laptops would easily satisfy any user, from the campus roamer to the daily commuter.
Last week, HP launched its powerful EliteBook workstations at SIGGRAPH 2008, but the company isn't done with its flurry of announcements yet. On Monday at Intel's Developers Forum (IDF) 2008, HP launched pint-sized business laptops: the EliteBook 2530p and the convertible tablet EliteBook 2730p, a refreshed HP Compaq 2710p. Now, frequent business travelers can be called elitists as well.
Sony recalled last month 438,000 of its Vaio laptops due to concerns about overheating batteries.
As shown in this story's Summary of Features, the 1.4-GHz and 1.6-GHz versions of the Pentium M processor found in the Centrino-based notebooks use Enhanced SpeedStep to clock down to 600 MHz while in power-saving mode. For example it can disable parts like cache or the floating-point portion of the processor to save a milliwatt here or there. When in Portable/Laptop mode, the CPU should clock down automatically when the system detects that the AC adapter has been removed. We found that all the notebooks tested did clock down to 600 MHz when AC power was removed. According to Intel literature, the Pentium M runs at an average of less than 1 watt when in Deeper Sleep mode, which is when a system is at rest, such as when the user is idle or between keystrokes.
Like other manufacturers, Toshiba published a web page dedicated to assisting customers with the recall, which Toshiba said could affect customers of the Satellite A100/A105, M50/M55, M100/M105 notebooks, as well as the Tecra A6 and Tecra A7 notebooks. Only those notebooks purchased between March and May of 2006 are affected, according to the Toshiba recall page.
